Xinyang: This is really good and I like how you talk about all the key characteristics of a tragic hero.

Rachel: You did a really good job of including real world examples. I also liked your essay format and thought you worded things really well.

Aaron: Think about the other side of this. Not everything is negative. Not all "means" and end results are evil.

Caesar Essay Rough Draft

A tragic hero is a really hard label to appropriately give someone because it is a very controversial topic. I do believe that Brutus was a tragic hero. The death of Caesar was most definitely a tragedy and was a crime that caused Brutus to have to live in fear for the rest of his life. I believe that Brutus thought he was doing the right thing and that it would save him and the common people. Maybe if he would have gone about it in a different way things would have worked out better for himself and he wouldn’t have had to die so soon. Maybe he would have actually come to power and run the kingdom. What made his doomed to make a serious error in judgment was the fact that he listened to what anyone had to say and was so easily persuaded by them. He got so caught up in what Cassius was telling him about how Caesar was bad even though he was his friend and knew that wasn’t true, that he got hungry for power and ultimately did what he thought he should to achieve that power. After Brutus kills Caesar, he does realize he has made an irreversible mistake and makes sure that he can say his speech before Antony to try to clear the air on his intentions for the murder. After his speech, he knows that he needs to get out of town before people come after him to try to kill him. Brutus knows that Antony is not happy and will do what it takes to come after him and the conspirators. Another way we know that Brutus knew he had made a mistake when he killed Caesar was when Brutus saw Caesar’s ghost. Brutus was so guilty and stressed about the whole situation that he was hallucinating and freaked himself out even more. When Antony and Octavious got their army together to come fight Brutus and Cassius, Brutus found out and got his army together also and they met up. At the end of the battle, Brutus felt an immense amount of guilt and knew he was very wrong in killing Caesar that he freed his slave. After this, Brutus told his slave to kill him and put him out of his misery. He ultimately died for a caused that he strongly believed in when he did it, but later realized he probably should have gone about the situation differently. Again, I do think that Brutus is a tragic hero, not a villain. People don’t always agree with things that others do, but that does not make them wrong. He knew what he was doing and thought it was the right thing and that is why he is a tragic hero.
