Feedback on Essays
Xinyang: This is really good and I like how you talk about all the key characteristics of a tragic hero.
Rachel: You did a really good job of including real world examples. I also liked your essay format and thought you worded things really well.
Aaron: Think about the other side of this. Not everything is negative. Not all "means" and end results are evil.

Caesar Essay Rough Draft
A tragic hero is a really hard label to appropriately give someone because it is a very controversial topic. I do believe that Brutus was a tragic hero. The death of Caesar was most definitely a tragedy and was a crime that caused Brutus to have to live in fear for the rest of his life. I believe that Brutus thought he was doing the right thing and that it would save him and the common people. Maybe if he would have gone about it in a different way things would have worked out better for himself and he wouldn’t have had to die so soon. Maybe he would have actually come to power and run the kingdom. What made his doomed to make a serious error in judgment was the fact that he listened to what anyone had to say and was so easily persuaded by them. He got so caught up in what Cassius was telling him about how Caesar was bad even though he was his friend and knew that wasn’t true, that he got hungry for power and ultimately did what he thought he should to achieve that power. After Brutus kills Caesar, he does realize he has made an irreversible mistake and makes sure that he can say his speech before Antony to try to clear the air on his intentions for the murder. After his speech, he knows that he needs to get out of town before people come after him to try to kill him. Brutus knows that Antony is not happy and will do what it takes to come after him and the conspirators. Another way we know that Brutus knew he had made a mistake when he killed Caesar was when Brutus saw Caesar’s ghost. Brutus was so guilty and stressed about the whole situation that he was hallucinating and freaked himself out even more. When Antony and Octavious got their army together to come fight Brutus and Cassius, Brutus found out and got his army together also and they met up. At the end of the battle, Brutus felt an immense amount of guilt and knew he was very wrong in killing Caesar that he freed his slave. After this, Brutus told his slave to kill him and put him out of his misery. He ultimately died for a caused that he strongly believed in when he did it, but later realized he probably should have gone about the situation differently. Again, I do think that Brutus is a tragic hero, not a villain. People don’t always agree with things that others do, but that does not make them wrong. He knew what he was doing and thought it was the right thing and that is why he is a tragic hero.

Brutus vs. Antony Speeches
I believe Antony had a more persuasive speech. Brutus really focuses on how he is right and focuses on himself and thinks he is better than everyone. Antony really makes a point to not focus the speech on himself, but on Caesar and the other men and how great they are. He uses repetition to really get this point across. Also, he is doing this to help make sure the people know he is playing for the right team because Antony doesn't want them to attack him. Antony uses logos to explain to the crowd how Caesar really was an honorable man unlike what Brutus told them. He lists reasons like he was humble and that he turned down the crown three times instead of just taking all of that power. Another thing is that Antony uses pathos to show his emotional connection to Caesar. He talks about how he really did love Caesar and that they were good friends. This helps him get the crowd on his side because they feel bad for him and his loss. A way that they both use ethos is when they start their speeches Brutus uses "Romans, countrymen, and lovers" and Antony uses "Friends, Romans, countrymen". This is an appeal to character because he lists a few social classes and they are general enough to include everyone, but yet specific enough to narrow it down so someone will feel like he is talking to them directly. Again, I feel that Antony had a more persuasive speech and got the crowd on his side more than Brutus did.

Propaganda/Media Literacy Portfolio
This is an advertisement from a magazine. This ad is trying to get people to think that tide is the best laundry detergent and that they should buy it. It appeals to middle class people who are educated and can afford name brand detergent. This example used logos and it uses repetition because it keeps repeating how much better this new and improved tide product is. Also, it appeals to the audiences wants and needs because people like to have the best thing to clean their clothing with. These tactics really work on the educated middle class because people like to look and smell the best. Most people don't feel as good if they have dirty, smelly clothing so by telling people that this will do a good job of cleaning their clothes and it is new and improved, they get more people to buy it.
This is a TV commercial from when Eisenhower was running for President in 1956. With this ad he is trying to get people to vote for him. His target audience is the middle class and really anyone in american that is running low on money and needs to save some. He uses logos in this ad to get people thinking that they really do want to save money. He also uses a real person talking to him not just him giving a speach to give the american public someone to relate to.
This is a screen shot from a Proactiv commercial where Justin Bieber is telling people how this product really worked for him and cleared his acne. This is trying to get more people to buy Proactiv and this ad targets teenagers. More so girls, but guys as well. The tactics used in the example are ethos and it appeals to audience insecurities. People are really ensecure about how they look especially teenagers. When teenagers get acne they stress out and then more and more comes. It is so hard to find a treatment that works. Justin Bieber is someone that a lot of teenagers admire and look up to so if he says that it worked for him then more people are going to believe him and buy it than if it was some random person off the street.
This is the type of ad that would go in a magazine, newspaper, etc. It it trying to get people to buy Under Armor items. The targeted audience is athletic younger people. The tactics used in this example are ethos because Michael Phelps is a well known athlete and a lot of people recognize him as someone who has done well. This could help Under Armor sell more things because people see him as someone who will know what is the new fashion and lead people to buy more.
This is a TV commercial and it is trying to get people to buy Dorito's chips. This is targeting really anyone who is of the middle class with a TV so that they can see the ad. It used pathos because it is funny and makes the people laugh that watch it. When someone sees something that makes them feel a certain emotion then they are more likely to relate the item advertised to the commercial. This makes them want to buy more of it.
This is the type of advertisement that would be in a magazine. It is trying to get people to send money to fix cleft palates of kids that don't have the ability to get it fixed without this money. This is focusing on the rich and middle class people with a little bit of money to spare for a good cause. The tactics used in the example are repetition and pathos. They use repetition by repeating how people should send this money to keep bringing the thought up in people's mind and then maybe they will be more willing to send money. Also, looking at the children, you feel bad for them so it makes you want to send money to help them.

Caesar Act I.i Reflection
Even though we don't have royalty in our society, there are political leaders that just because of the position they hold that they are better than everyone else. This is similar to the Elizabethan times. Also, people now still think that they should talk down to people with less money, schooling, or a lower job or social class. Another thing is that when we are switching presidents or another high powered leader, the people in the country kind of go into panic to see who the next person is going to be. They want it to be who they think the right person is because nobody wants a bad leader. I think the author makes an accurate characterization of today’s public. There are a lot of people who want some sort or leader to tell them what to do. We rely on the people around us most of the time to get through the day so when we are switching leaders or don't know exactly what to do, we sometimes struggle. The author is correct because people are still very similar to the people that lived years ago. Sure we have changed, but we still make fun of the people that aren't just like us and have some similar characteristics.
